Microsoft Announces Plans to Develop 3D Metaverse Apps for its Games
The software giant Microsoft plans to build 3D metaverse apps for its popular games. The announcement included Microsoft Teams metaverse for video calls and meetings.
However, the focus is also on the inclusion of gaming in the metaverse which Microsoft CEO Nadella confirmed.
“You can absolutely expect us to do things in gaming,” says Nadella. “If you take Halo as a game, it is a metaverse. Minecraft is a metaverse, and so is Flight Sim. In some sense, they’re 2D today, and the question is can you now take that to a fully 3D world, and we absolutely plan to do so.” Nadella said in an interview.
Transitioning Minecraft from 2D to a 3D metaverse is an ambitious and exciting plan. Microsoft has been working on the project for a while to turn the game into a metaverse on AR and VR headsets. It showed a while ago what might the game look like in the future when it introduced the HoloLens headset. The project is underway for six years now but all that is out for now is Minecraft Earth; an AR mobile game.
A profound 3D interactive metaverse between Minecraft, Flight Simulator, and Halo is a massive project. The most interesting part would be a metaverse app allowing players to explore games side by side via VR or AR headsets. Players will have a new reality in virtual reality, the idea that is already well underway in Flight Simulator where players can fly and explore the whole world which is quite similar to the real world.
The transition to 3D metaverse gaming is a long-term project and Nadella hasn’t shared any specific timeline on it. However, the company is already working on 3D avatars and virtual spaces in the domain of metaverse.
But the real question is how Microsoft will execute the project and adapt is AltspaceVR’s social network and games for metaverse apps with AR and VR utility in Xbox consoles.
