No more NFT Games distributed on Steam.
A change to Steam’s rules and guidelines shows that the site has banned games that use blockchain technology or allow NFT and crypto currency trading.
Valve has added a line to Steam’s page for partners and Steamworks users that makes it clear that NFT trading games will soon be banned from the platform.
Under “what you shouldn’t publish on Steam,” a new rule says that you shouldn’t distribute “applications built on blockchain technology that issue or allow exchange of cryptocurrencies or NFTs.”
Today, game makers say that their NFT-using games are being taken off the platform. Below, the Twitter account for Age Of Rust, a game where players “collect in-game NFTs,” said that “Steam will be kicking all blockchain games off the platform, including Age Of Rust.”
The Age Of Rust Twitter account says, “From what we know, Steam thinks that items have value, and they don’t let items on their platform that can have real-world value.”
As of right now, there are a lot of games on Steam that use NFT and cryptocurrency as a part of the game. One of them is Mir4, which lets players earn cryptocurrency while playing, even though bad reviews say the game is boring.
Valve hasn’t said anything about NFT games yet. The only thing it has done is update the rules and guidelines for Steamworks.
